MORE than half the stars in the Universe have been overlooked, astronomers say after an eight-year analysis of data from the Cosmic Background Explorer satellite. The data gave a snapshot of the Universe at infrared wavelengths. At last week’s American Astronomical Society meeting in Washington DC, scientists said there was more infrared light than expected. Most stars are shrouded by dust and are hidden at visible wavelengths. “One-half to two-thirds of star formation is taking place in dust-shrouded regions,” says David Spergel of Princeton University, New Jersey.
